Mini Dental Implants
Recent years have seen the emergence of a new development in denture wear. That new development is the introduction of mini dental implants to stabilize dentures, particularly lower dentures. The dental patient whom we should have the most sympathy for are the ones who wear lower dentures. Always loose a lower denture can be a constant source of frustration and embarrassment. Not now however!
Dental Implants stem from the 1970’s when a Swedish Orthopedic Surgeon began experimenting with pure Titanium metal placed into oral bone. The human body does not reject certain materials such as Gold, Platinum, Vitreous Carbon, Vitalium, Titanium, and Ti6Al4V.
After drilling an appropriately sized hole oral bone will grow close to metal provided there is no movement between the metal and the bone for a period of about six months. Certain coatings on the metal can reduce that time to about three months… if you’re in a hurry, and if you feel lucky. If the bone is dense, as it is on the chin area, its also possible to screw an implant directly into the bone, and then attach a denture onto this implant without waiting the six months, or drilling a very big hole.
Thus the birth of the Miniature Denture Stabilization Implant. The first implants of this type were pioneered by a Dentist named Sendax about twenty-five years ago. How long they last depends upon how well they are taken care of (kept clean). Of course in any discussion of Dentistry, it must be mentioned that what you have to do to take care of your teeth and mouth is keep them clean. That’s all, just keep them clean.
There is one case where Sendax implants have been in service for more than 25 years. So, we come to the question of who needs these little implants? And the answer to that question is everyone who wears a lower full denture. A full lower denture is a constant source of frustration and embarrassment. Is life worth living if you can’t eat what you want? Many, in fact most, of our patients who have received these implants say they can eat many more foods than before. And what they don’t have to eat is the yucky taste of Denture Adhesive. More information about these miniature dental implants and an interesting video about their placement can be found at the web address above.
